Pelvic Floor Therapy

Discover This Transformative Method of Treatment

Pelvic floor therapy focuses on pelvic floor muscle discomfort, weakness, and dysfunction. This specialty involves the muscles and tissues that form a sling-like structure in the lower pelvis. The pelvic muscles are essential to the body, as they support the bladder, bowel, and uterus.

At Integrity Rehab, our pelvic floor physical and occupational therapists treat pelvic floor disorders such as persistent pelvic pain, bowel and bladder difficulties, and sexual dysfunction. During a pelvic floor therapy session, one of our highly trained therapists will work with you to identify which muscles need to be strengthened or relaxed and guide you through various exercises to enhance pelvic floor function.

Pelvic floor therapy requires extensive education and training. Our occupational and physical therapists have completed specialized pelvic floor assessment and treatment training. Our goal is to help patients in Austin, Leander, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Central Killeen, West Killeen, South Temple, West Temple and Burleson achieve better health with our scientifically proven techniques.

We use an evidence-based approach to produce effective results as quickly as possible. Suppose you’ve been struggling with symptoms from an injury or underlying condition. In that case, we are equipped with the tools you need to recover safely.

Conditions That Pelvic Floor Therapy Treats

Our therapists at Integrity Rehab treat various pelvic conditions. Our techniques and treatments will depend on the symptoms and condition you’ve been experiencing.

Conditions that can be improved with pelvic floor therapy include:

  • Urinary incontinence and bowel problems: Bowel and bladder control problems, such as leakage or increased urgency. Symptoms can also be mild or severe, ranging from a slight loss of urine after sneezing, coughing, or laughing to full urinary control and/or constipation.
  • Interstitial cystitis (IC): Pelvic pain, bladder pain, uncomfortable pressure, and a frequent urge to urinate are all symptoms of IC.
  • Pelvic and lower abdominal pain: Pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis, ranging from a sharp jab to a dull aching. Pain in the vaginal area and/or rectum is also possible.
  • Pregnancy/postpartum pain: Many women experience pain or discomfort during pregnancy, as well as urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti).
  • Pelvic organ prolapse: Prolapse occurs when the pelvic organs drop from their normal position.
  • Sexual dysfunction: Pelvic floor symptoms can cause issues like reduced sexual arousal, infrequent orgasm, and dyspareunia (genital pain that occurs before, during, or after intercourse).
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED): ED is when you cannot get or maintain an erection during intercourse. Pelvic dysfunction can cause ED; however, erectile dysfunction can stem from other factors and conditions.

By embracing an evidence-based approach to pelvic floor therapy, our patients experience relief from their symptoms and regain their quality of life. Our team knows how to help you find the results you need for long-term pelvic health.

Pelvic Floor Therapy Treatments

At Integrity Rehab, we will begin treatment with a thorough exam that includes an assessment of your condition, current symptoms, and other health or lifestyle factors.

During the initial exam, you and your provider can discuss any questions or concerns regarding treatment. We understand pelvic health can be a sensitive topic so that sessions will occur in a private setting, one-on-one with your therapist.

Following the initial consultation, your therapist will design a treatment plan that is customized to your unique needs and will successfully meet recovery goals. Treatment options typically include:

  • Pelvic floor exercises: Pelvic floor exercises can help ease tight muscles and improve coordination.
  • Biofeedback: Biofeedback is a specialized device that helps to retrain your pelvic floor muscles. It involves special sensors that monitor your pelvic floor muscles as you move them.
  • Bladder and bowel retraining: If you’ve been struggling with incontinence, our therapists will help you develop a program and schedule for urinary and bowel movements.
  • Education and lifestyle modifications: Our team will educate you on maintaining your recovery in and out of the clinic. Lifestyle modifications may include proper posture, diet, and other factors affecting pelvic floor health. We may also recommend changes to your work or home environment and teach you home exercises to help reduce pain and restore functions.

The goal of recovery is to tackle your symptoms and use the most effective techniques to restore lost functions. At Integrity Rehab, our mission is to guide you on the path to pelvic pain relief through a combination of innovative treatments, research-based practices, and personalized care. Our expert therapists will work closely with you to develop a tailored plan that addresses your unique needs and helps you regain control over your life.
